How to Get a Residence Permit in Turkey: 2026 Guide for Foreigners

Foreign nationals who want to remain in Turkey beyond the period allowed by their visa, visa exemption or applicable short-stay rules generally need an appropriate legal basis for residence. A successful residence permit application begins with choosing the correct statutory category, using the official e-Residence system and preparing documents that consistently support the real purpose of stay. This guide explains the national framework while highlighting practical issues that frequently affect foreign residents in Antalya.

Quick Answer

To obtain a residence permit in Turkey, first identify the legal residence category that matches your purpose of stay, then initiate the correct first, extension or transfer application through the official e-Residence system. You must provide the documents required for that category and follow the appointment or submission procedure generated for your application. Renting a home or buying property does not, by itself, guarantee that a residence permit will be issued.

Legal Framework Law No. 6458 Residence permit categories and procedures are governed principally by the Law on Foreigners and International Protection.

Who Needs a Residence Permit in Turkey?

Under Turkey’s immigration framework, foreigners who intend to remain in the country beyond the period allowed by their visa, visa exemption or applicable short-stay rules generally need a residence permit unless another lawful status or statutory exemption applies.

Residence Requirement Law No. 6458 · Residence Permit Framework

The commonly referenced 90-days-within-180-days rule does not create an unlimited right to remain in Turkey. Once the permitted visa or visa-exemption period is exhausted, a foreign national who wishes to continue residing in Turkey must have an appropriate legal basis.

The correct analysis is therefore not simply “Do I want to stay longer than 90 days?” Some nationalities have different visa arrangements, and certain foreign nationals may already hold another status that affects residence requirements.

What Types of Residence Permits Are Available in Turkey?

Article 30 of Law No. 6458 establishes six principal residence permit categories.

01 · SHORT-TERM Short-Term Residence Permit

Covers specific statutory purposes including qualifying property ownership and other grounds recognised under Articles 31-33.

02 · FAMILY Family Residence Permit

Available to qualifying foreign family members where the applicant and sponsor satisfy the statutory family-residence conditions.

03 · STUDENT Student Residence Permit

Applies to qualifying foreign students according to their education status and the relevant statutory provisions.

04 · LONG-TERM Long-Term Residence Permit

Intended for qualifying foreigners with at least eight years of continuous lawful residence and the other statutory conditions.

05 · HUMANITARIAN Humanitarian Residence Permit

An exceptional residence status available in the circumstances specifically defined by Law No. 6458.

06 · TRAFFICKING VICTIMS Residence Permit for Victims of Human Trafficking

A specialised protective residence status for persons who meet the statutory conditions.

The categories are national. There is no separate legal category called an “Antalya residence permit”. Antalya becomes relevant because of the applicant’s address, competent migration authority and local administrative circumstances.

How Do You Choose the Correct Residence Permit Category?

The first substantive step is to identify the legal purpose that genuinely explains why you intend to reside in Turkey.

The application should not begin with a random document checklist. The legal ground should come first, and the supporting evidence should then be built around that ground.

PROPERTY You own residential property

Property ownership may support a short-term residence application where the statutory and administrative conditions are satisfied.

FAMILY You are joining qualifying family

A family residence route may be relevant where the applicant and sponsor meet the applicable requirements.

EDUCATION You are studying in Turkey

A student residence permit may apply according to the institution and level of study.

LONG-TERM You have established long lawful residence

Eight years of residence is one condition, but it does not by itself guarantee long-term residence status.

Do not choose a permit type simply because another foreigner received it Similar-looking cases may differ because of nationality, entry history, property status, family relationships, previous residence records or the actual purpose of stay.

How Do You Apply for a Residence Permit in Turkey?

First, extension and transfer applications are initiated through the official e-Residence (e-İkamet) system operated by the Presidency of Migration Management.

1
Determine the legal residence category

Identify the statutory basis that corresponds to the genuine purpose of your stay.

2
Use the official e-Residence system

Enter identity, passport, contact, address and category-specific information accurately.

3
Prepare the generated document requirements

Gather the documents applicable to your individual permit category and application circumstances.

4
Follow the appointment or submission procedure

First and transfer applications generally involve attendance before the relevant Migration Management authority when required by the system.

5
Respond to additional-document requests

If further documents are requested, comply within the deadline specified by the authority.

6
Follow the application until a decision

Keep the application documents, payment records and any official notifications.

For the detailed operational workflow, see our Turkey Residence Permit Application: Step-by-Step Guide .

Use only official government application channels The Presidency of Migration Management expressly warns foreigners about unofficial websites and intermediaries presenting themselves as authorised residence-permit application services.

What Documents Are Commonly Required for a Residence Permit?

There is no single universal document list for every residence permit. The correct file depends on the category and the applicant’s circumstances.

However, common elements may include:

Valid passport or recognised travel document.
e-Residence application form.
Biometric photographs meeting current requirements.
Evidence supporting the legal purpose of residence.
Accommodation or address documentation where applicable.
Health-insurance documentation where required.
Financial information or evidence where requested or required.
Category-specific supporting documents.

More documents are not automatically better. The important issue is whether the documents are current, authentic, internally consistent and legally relevant to the selected residence category.

How Long Must Your Passport Be Valid?

Official Migration Management guidance requires the passport or travel document to remain valid for at least 60 days beyond the requested residence permit period.

Passport Validity Law No. 6458 · Article 23

Residence permit duration is tied to passport validity. A foreign national should therefore check passport expiry before deciding what permit duration to request.

A passport that expires soon can materially affect the application even where the other residence conditions are satisfied.

Does Renting or Buying Property Automatically Give You a Residence Permit?

No.

A rental agreement can be relevant as evidence of accommodation or address, but renting an apartment is not itself a statutory residence-permit category.

Property ownership is different because ownership of qualifying residential immovable property is recognised within the short-term residence framework. Even then, ownership does not mean automatic approval.

Accommodation evidence and legal eligibility are different questions A document proving where you live does not necessarily prove why Turkish immigration law permits you to remain in Turkey.

Foreign property buyers in Antalya should review the residence consequences before completing a purchase rather than assuming that a title deed automatically produces residence status.

How Long Does a Residence Permit Application Take?

Under the official framework, residence permit applications are to be finalised no later than 90 days.

Importantly, the 90-day period begins when the required information and documents have been submitted completely to the competent authority.

Decision Period Law No. 6458 · Article 21

Processing time should not be calculated mechanically from the day an incomplete online form was first started. Completeness of the application file matters.

Administrative workload, requests for further documents and the characteristics of the individual application can affect the practical timeline.

Can You Leave Turkey While Your Residence Permit Application Is Pending?

In certain circumstances, yes.

Current official guidance provides a specific exit-entry mechanism for foreigners holding the properly approved Residence Permit Application Document together with the relevant fee receipt.

Under that framework, re-entry is generally expected within 15 days. If the foreigner remains abroad longer, the ordinary visa rules may become relevant.

Check the documents before travelling Do not assume that an online application screenshot alone gives unrestricted exit and re-entry rights. The applicable application document and current official requirements should be confirmed before departure.

When Should You Apply to Renew a Residence Permit?

Article 24 of Law No. 6458 provides that extension applications are made within 60 days before the existing residence permit expires and, in any event, before expiry.

Renewal is not automatic. The applicant must continue to satisfy the legal requirements applicable to the permit and provide the required updated information and documents.

A previous approval does not guarantee the next one Residence circumstances, address information, insurance, property status, family situation, immigration history or administrative requirements may have changed since the previous application.

What Happens If Your Residence Permit Application Is Rejected?

A residence permit application may be refused where the statutory requirements for the selected category are not satisfied or where another legal or administrative issue affects the application.

The first step after rejection should be to read the formal administrative decision and notification rather than relying only on an SMS, verbal explanation or assumption about the reason.

The following issues may need to be reviewed:

GROUND Why was the application refused?

Identify the specific factual and legal ground stated in the decision.

NOTIFICATION When was the decision served?

Notification can affect procedural deadlines and available legal remedies.

STATUS What is the applicant’s current legal-stay position?

Refusal should be considered together with the foreigner’s remaining legal basis for stay.

REMEDY What legal route is available?

Judicial or other administrative options depend on the decision and facts of the individual case.

A residence permit refusal is not the same legal act as a deportation decision or entry ban.

What Should Foreigners Applying From Antalya Check Before Filing?

The legal residence categories are national, but applicants living in Antalya should also make sure that the facts stated in the application accurately match their local circumstances.

Is the Antalya address accurate and supported by appropriate documentation?
Does the selected residence category genuinely match the purpose of stay?
Do passport, entry and previous residence records match the information entered in e-Residence?
Is any property relied upon in the application suitable for the relevant legal route?
Are there previous refusals, overstays, entry restrictions or immigration issues that should be reviewed first?
Has the current administrative status of the intended Antalya address been checked where relevant?

Residence Permits in Turkey: 2026 Questions

How do I apply for a residence permit in Turkey?

First identify the residence permit category that matches your purpose of stay. First, extension and transfer applications are then initiated through the official e-Residence system, followed by the document and appointment or submission procedure applicable to the application.

Do I automatically get a residence permit if I rent an apartment?

No. A rental agreement may help prove accommodation, but renting a property does not itself create a statutory entitlement to residence.

Does buying a house automatically give me a residence permit?

No. Qualifying residential property ownership can provide a legal basis for a short-term residence permit, but the applicant and property must satisfy the applicable conditions and approval is not automatic.

How long must my passport be valid?

The passport or travel document must generally remain valid for at least 60 days beyond the requested residence permit duration.

How long does a Turkish residence permit application take?

The statutory framework provides for residence permit applications to be finalised no later than 90 days, with the period beginning after the required information and documents have been completely submitted.

Can a lawyer apply for a residence permit on my behalf?

Turkish law allows legal representatives or lawyers to assist with residence-permit procedures, but the administration may still require the foreign applicant to be personally present where necessary.

When can I renew my residence permit?

Extension applications may be initiated within 60 days before the current residence permit expires and must in any event be made before expiry.

Does a residence permit allow me to work in Turkey?

A residence permit and a work permit are different legal statuses. Holding a residence permit does not by itself provide a general right to work in Turkey.

Can I leave Turkey while my residence permit application is pending?

Current official guidance provides an exit-entry mechanism for qualifying applicants who hold the approved Residence Permit Application Document and relevant fee receipt, generally subject to re-entry within 15 days.

Can an English-speaking immigration lawyer in Antalya review my application?

Yes. A lawyer can review the applicant’s immigration history, residence category, passport, address, supporting documents, previous refusals and other legal risks before or during the residence permit process.
